Gurdjieff and Solioonensius at Work in Today’s World

The term solioonensius, from Gurdjieff’s book All and Everything, seems to be at work in today’s world. This is one of many words Gurdjieff made up so that readers would come to new understandings without the associations we attach to familiar words.

Solioonensius

represents the notion of large catastrophic events which affect the human psyche, bringing chaos and disruption to our ordinary life. The Mongols sweeping down through central Asia, the Black Plague, World War II and the holocaust, are examples. The Covid virus and its variants are yet another symptom that we have entered a period of solioonensius.

The thing is, Gurdjieff understands these upheavals as “law conformable” cosmic events initiated by forces beyond human control in order to rebalance planetary energies. Yet humans, in their hubris, point fingers and blame one another instead of understanding that energy will be extracted from us “willy nilly.” The less conscious the energy, the more that is required. In an unconscious world, death releases the most energy. But we humans have choice. We can feed energy into the hysteria or we can come inside ourselves and create quality energy with our Work.

Bennett’s Take On Solioonensius

Bennett, who predicted in the 1970’s that this time would come, saw solioonensius as a period of great opportunity for those engaged in inner work. “All of you who are young will likely see the great transition. Everyone must understand that this is the greatest opportunity that has existed for many thousands of years in the Work. Because not for thousands of years has there been such a need for people who could work.”

Bennett expressed hope that the human race would rise to the challenge and not perish. He believed that in order to survive, a new paradigm would need to be born. One based on a shift from focusing on “me” to “thee.” He said, “The societies of the last few thousand years have been based on egoism, the satisfaction of personal desires rather than the desire for service. For the first time in a very long time, mankind requires a new structure, a new way of life.”

Solioonensius Today

I believe the ground has been shifting under our feet for several years. Partisan politics, growing mistrust and misinformation, unrest and climate instability. With the pendulum increasing its crazy swing, it’s not hard to believe that world energies have become unbalanced. Is it unbelievable that solioonensius is the result?

What Can I Do?

Take a Break

I can come inside myself and strengthen my inner practice be it prayer, meditation, yoga, contemplation or study. Align myself and work to balance myself. Set an intention to externally be of service to someone or something—an act, a word, a gesture.

What Makes it Work?

We know it’s Work when there’s friction in us. For example, say or do something for someone you don’t know or don’t agree with. Conversely, don’t speak or act like you always act. Feed the universe energy by struggling with yourself, not others.

  1. Thank you Roberta. Your straight forward, easy to understand (with no need to look up words I don’t know the meaning of….. and I’m not referring to the words that Gurdjieff made up!) explanation of Solioonensius and what we need to do as a result of it, is refreshingly simple but still requires conscious work on everyone’s part, individually, collectively and most importantly for the Greater Good.
